Prom-Proofing: 9 Ways to Guarantee an Amazing Prom Night
5. Don’t put such a high premium on grand gestures and exhibitions.
If you don’t win or even get nominated for prom queen, receive a mediocre prom-posal, your date forgets to get you a corsage, you don’t have enough dough to front for a ballin’ limo entrance… LET IT GO. These are the things in the media that fuels the high expectations for the perfect night, but they really are not required in order to make joyful memories. If all doesn’t go according to your fantasy plan, it’s ok. You don’t need these things to have fun.
6. Sex on prom night is as clichéd as it gets, and is never as romantic as it may seem.
If pressures associated with the expectations for the perfect Prom experience has you considering losing your virginity, maybe reconsider. While I do not judge those I’ve known who have decided to have sex on Prom Night, I can say everyone I know who has done so, has ended up regretting this decision. Though their reasons vary, the outcome is the same. So I just do not recommend it, especially if this would be your very first time. If my warning is not enough to convince you and you do make the decision to have sex, BE SAFE- BE SMART-USE PROTECTION.
7. Don’ t over do it on the partying!
The drinking age in America is 21, drugs are illegal, and though you feel entitled to let your hair down as fancy pants, party planning, almost adults, remember certain consequences will stick with you for life. I had a girlfriend that, on the same night her boyfriend was crowned Prom King, he was also later busted for reeking of whiskey, with his pockets overflowing with illegal drug substances. Obviously, his reckless behavior got him de-throned, but it also ruined the evening for his date. Her dream night ended while watching her Prom King boyfriend attempt to escape police custody, and he eventually ended up handcuffed, maced in the face, and covered in snot and tears, as he sat in the back of a cop car. As a result of his arrest, he lost his scholarship to college, my friend dumped him, and he is now supporting his baby mama, as a career pizza delivery boy. True story. You may be smart and stylish, but no one invincible. You break the law, it will find a way to bite you in the butt, with consequences that could potentially last for the rest of your life.
8. CHILL OUT… so you don’t burn yourself out, before the night even begins.
The formality of the occasion and the planning involved for Prom creates a simulated taste of adulthood, but it’s also one of the last few moments you will have to connect and make memories with the peers you grew up with for so many years. Each of you is about to step out of the cushioned comforts of adolescence, and into the real world. Relax and savor these last moments with your friends.
9. Don’t get hung up on all the details and know that you just can’t sweat the small stuff. Just have fun!
After stepping in the gum/vomit puddle, following my anti-climactic Junior Prom, I was literally on the verge of tears. Thankfully I was with my best friend, who could always read me like a book. The moment she caught my eyes getting misty, she immediately grabbed my hand and started to run. Though a simple action, my evening was salvaged as we skipped and sprinted through all the neighbor’s sprinkler systems, laughing and singing Destiny’s Child songs. Even if the drama does happen to go down, you have to make the best of the time you have left with these people.
I think Prom is such a highly valued milestone in culture, because it is one of the few occasions that allows those on the brink of adulthood to put time on pause, take a deep breath, and really celebrate the end of an era, before diving head first into the unknown perils of the future. You have to take advantage of these moments, and can’t allow yourself to get too hung up on the little things you believe are supposed to happen, otherwise you will miss out on all the good stuff that comes with attending Prom.
Prom may not end up being the best night of your life, but you can still have a good time and enjoy yourself. Something you will eventually learn in adulthood is that learning how to accept and take everything as it comes, is just apart of life. As you experience this commemorative celebration of the transition into adulthood, remember to not over think the evening and just enjoy the ride.
