5 DIY All Natural Skincare Solutions, for Winter Weather
As a curly girl, I’m sure you already understand the significance of maintaining a balanced, moisture based styling ritual to protect and preserve your mane. The more you nourish and moisturize hair, the less potential there is for frizz or brittle, broken ends and more potential there is for supple, bouncy, beautiful curls. The same can be said for your skin. As the largest organ of the body, your skin craves ultra hydrating, tender loving care as well, once the cold winter winds really get to blowing.
This winter, I’ve noticed a significant change in my skin’s tone, evenness, and overall health, because of inconsistencies in my personal maintenance regiment. I’ll wash my face with an exfoliant scrub, but neglect to follow this step up with a moisturizing cleanser. I’ll use a moisturizing body wash in the shower, but rush out the door before remembering to apply lotion. On the rare occasion the sun does make an appearance, I neglect to apply any SPF to my exposed skin, due to becoming accustomed to cloudy, grey, snow speckled days. Chilly winds also make me more inclined to opt for a warm coffee, over a glass of water, dehydrating me from the inside out. When discussing this with others, people always tell me I have nothing to worry about because “black don’t crack”, but I’m cracking! Makeup can only hide so much, and lines and dark circles do not lie.
However, I’m of the firm belief that it’s never too late for a change. Rather than rock my budget by dropping serious dough on an expensive series of skincare solutions, I would rather use all natural, DIY remedies, to revitalize my dreary skin. Why? I know I will be more motivated to utilize these products on a more consistent basis, after having had a hand in creating them myself. Plus, DIY projects are always fun!

Just because there is less sunlight, does not mean there are less UV rays reeking havoc on your healthy complexion.
5. Cut down on Caffeine and Alcohol- Drink Lots of Water!
It’s a common misconception that it staying hydrated during winter months is less of a priority than in summer months. I’m here to set the record straight and let you know that is completely false. Staying hydrated in cold weather is just as important as staying hydrated during warm seasons, as the conditions of cold climates and harsh winter winds have more potential to literally absorb all your body’s moisture right out of you, before you even notice you are thirsty. Just because you may not be exhibiting signs of a loss in moisture retention, like via the same level of excessive sweating you may experience in the summer, doesn’t mean that your body is not experiencing dehydration. Though you may not feel as thirsty in winter, it’s always best to drink up!

Though caffeine may give you the extra pep in your step you need and many caffeinated beverages are designed to warm you up, caffeine-based beverages are diuretics that cause frequent urination, and subsequently cause dehydration. The same reaction happens when consuming alcoholic beverages. If you are concerned about your skin’s hydration, limit your caffeine intake by switching to hot water with lemon. The water’s temperature will still warm you up while keeping you hydrated, and lemon is a natural source for energy.
