A Tribute to Michael Brown and the People of Missouri

If you have been paying attention to the news lately, then you have heard about the recent tragedy of 18 year old Michael Brown’s untimely death, and the tumultuous ripple effect this has caused throughout all St. Louis County. We at Miss Jessie’s were saddened by the news of these horrific events, and our hearts go out to all those who have been affected by them.

Once known for hosting songbird Judy Garland on their clanging trollies, this sleepy, Midwestern town of St. Louis has become synonymous with violence, tragedy, and pain, ever since the breaking of this news story, placing it’s citizens under a microscope for the rest of the country to critique. We at Miss Jessie’s would like to take a different approach. It is our wish to lift their spirits and encourage the people of the town of Ferguson and St. Louis County to stay strong and not lose hope, for as the old saying goes, “It is always darkest before the dawn”. We want to remind the people of St. Louis, as well as the rest of the country, of the innate resilience of their residents, by sharing some powerful words of wisdom from St. Louis born poet, author, and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou.

Maya Angelou reading her original poem, And I Still Rise:

It is our hope that all those affected by these tragedies will find the inner strength to perceive these circumstances not as negative, insurmountable adversities, but rather as an opportunity to inspire positive social progress and enact real change, so history will finally stop repeating itself and the next generation will thrive. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Brown family, as well as the people of Ferguson, Missouri. While things may be difficult now, peace is on the horizon and soon enough, you will rise.
