Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves, by The Eurythmics, feat. Aretha Franklin

The month of March is dedicated to Women’s History Month, and yesterday, March 8th, is actually considered International Women’s Day (WooHoo!). As a woman myself, this has had me thinking about how the expectations for the role of a female within our society and the definition of feminism has transitioned and transformed over the years. While things may not be perfect, American women have been fortunate enough to actively act as driving forces for progressive waves of positive change, helping to inspiring other individuals that are still forced to adhere to societal standards based upon a more misogynistic world view.

There are many facets to female empowerment; however today I’m focusing on sisterhood. The powerful bond between sisters facilitates the molding of brave, brilliant, successful, independent women. So celebrate sisterhood with this list of 10 successful sister teams!

We all remember when Mary Kate and Ashley were child stars, starring as littlest sister Michelle Tanner on the family friendly sitcom, Full House, but many people do not know that MK and Ash really made their fortune after becoming CEOs of their own successful production company, Dualstar Entertainment Group, when they were only seven years old. They have since become well-respected fashion designers and entrepreneurs. Younger sister Elizabeth began her acting career with small parts in Dualstar produced projects, almost fading into obscurity as just another celeb sibling, till her breakout performance in the critically acclaimed film, Martha Marcy May Marlene in 2011. Since then, Elizabeth has held the torch as the only Olsen sister that is still acting, starring in a string of successful films, including the upcoming sequel to The Avengers, The Avengers: The Age of Ultron.

While I can go on for days about Miko and Titi’s successful, all inspiring business partnership and sisterhood, divulging all their beauty and entrepreneurial secrets, I know these things would be best expressed when heard directly from the source.

That’s right, curly cuties- Miss Jessie’s co-founder and curl expert, Miko Branch, is publishing a memoir, all about she and Titi’s personal journey to queens of the curl empire we all know and love, entitled Miss Jessie’s – Creating a Successful Business from Scratch – Naturally.

More About the Book:

Miss Jessie’s – Creating a Successful Business from Scratch – Naturally, is a memoir and business guide, rich with inspirational life lessons and unique business advice from Miko Branch, the Chief Executive Officer of the dynamic Miss Jessie’s — the company that revolutionized the hair care industry.

Miko recalls that when she and her sister, Titi, were children, their grandmother, Miss Jessie, taught them independence and showed them the value of being “do it yourself” women, all while whipping up homemade hair concoctions at her kitchen table. As co-founders of Miss Jessie’s, Miko reveals how she and Titi applied those lessons to create a successful business from scratch.

A family memoir with a wealth of practical business advice and handy hair tips, told in Miko’s funny and relatable voice, Miss Jessie’s chronicles Miko’s remarkable story from her childhood learning independence as a latchkey kid in Jamaica, Queens, to co-founding her remarkable company with her sister in their shared home salon in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Miko reflects on her hard-won insights working for her autocratic, iron-fisted father, and how the self-sufficiency she learned in childhood helped her blossom as a single mother with bills to pay, a child to raise, and a dream to pursue. Miko speaks honestly of her mistakes and successes, and of her role as an industry leader, negotiating multi-million dollar deals while at the same time restoring the self esteem of natural and curly haired women.

Miss Jessie’s provides an honest look into the life and life lessons of the woman behind the brand. Miss Jessie’s offers invaluable instruction that can be applied to any business, and is equal parts charming and enlightening, chock full of entertaining stories and a personal collection of Miko’s family photos. At its core, Miss Jessie’s confirms that with effort the American Dream is possible.
