Scary Movie Series: 14 Supernatural Spine Chillers

As we continue with our month long Scary Movie Series, this week we bring you a list of creepy films that explore the supernatural entities that rattle us to the core. What’s more frightening than the potential powers of the unnatural and the mysteries of the unknown? I think this is perhaps one of the scariest movie lists I’ve compiled thus far, so if you plan on watching any of these films, I suggest doing so after the kids in bed.

1. The Grudge
An unsuspecting family relocates to suburban Tokyo, only to discover their home is cursed.

2. The Haunting
Based on the Shirley Jackson novel, The Haunting of Hill House, a group of individuals gather at a mysterious mansion, and are subjected to a night of terror.

3. Suspiria
A young girl transfers to an exclusive Ballet Academy that is controlled by a coven of witches. With a haunting soundtrack and exquisite cinematography, this horror flick definitely ranks amongst the classic must see movies.

4. Nightmare on Elm Street
This Wes Craven classic tells the Freddy Kruger’s revenge on the residents of Elm Street, by torturing them in their dreams. “1…2… Freddy’s coming for you…”

5. The Sixth Sense
“I see dead people…” A little boy learns to understand his unique gift; the ability to see and communicate with ghosts.

6. The Omen
Satan’s son Damien, infiltrates an unsuspecting, wealthy and politically influential family.

7. The Ring
A mysterious haunted videotape brings a week of torture, followed by a horrifying death, in 7 days.

8. 1408
Starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson and adapted from the Stephen King short story, this psychological thriller tells the tale of a haunted hotel room. Picture The Shining, in an urban setting, and all from Jack’s perspective… aka, terrifying.

9. Poltergeist
“They’re here…” Produced by Stephen Spielberg, this is the story of a haunting in suburbia.

10. Mama
A family takes in a pair of feral sisters found living alone in the woods. Their ability to survive alone for five years was deemed a miracle, however once the adoptive parents begin experiencing strange paranormal activity, it becomes apparent that perhaps the girls were never really alone at all.

11. The Amityville Horror
A family moves into their dream home at a bargain price, but the house has it’s own secrets and is not what it seems.

12. Queen of the Damned
Based on the bestselling books by Anne Rice and starring Aaliyah and Stuart Townsend, this is the story of vampire LeStat and the consequences of awakening the ancient evil vampire queen, Akasha.

13. Carnival of Souls
A young woman is literally haunted by memories from her troubled past.

14. The Exorcist
This is a tale of a 12 year old girl that becomes possessed by the devil, and desperate for help, her mother convinces two priests to perform an exorcism. Released in 1973, this is a horror film who’s terror stands the test of time.
