While discussions of a remake of the 1984 classic, Ghostbusters, have been swirling around the movie circuit for years, it has recently been confirmed that the project is now officially in full swing, set to begin shooting in New York City this summer. Current SNL cast members Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon will star alongside Bridesmaids’ stars, Melissa McCarthy and Kristin Wiig, who is also an SNL alum, in the remake, produced by Paul Feig.

Rumor has it that Feig opted to take over the project, proposing the all female cast, after conditions surrounding the initial attempt to do a Ghostbusters remake with the original director, Ivan Reitman, prevented the project from coming into fruition. When speaking to Entertainment Weekly regarding the new Ghostbusters, Feig states, “My favorite thing to do is work with funny women. I was like, ‘What if it was an all female cast? If they were all women?’ Suddenly, my mind kind of exploded: that would be really fun.” Even original Ghostbusters cast members, Bill Murray and Dan Akroyd, have both spoken out in support of the new direction in the Ghostbusters franchise, Akroyd stating to the Hollywood Reporter, “The Aykroyd family is delighted by this inheritance of the Ghostbusters torch by these most magnificent women in comedy.”

People have a tendency to doubt the comedic punch, when it comes to remakes of comedy cult classics, however the collective body of work between these four incredibly talented women, gives me complete faith in this ensemble cast. We’ve seen Wiig and McCarthy act as a dynamic comedic duo on numerous occasions, in Bridesmaids and as reoccurring performers SNL. Jones got her big break when she was hired as a writer on SNL in early 2014, and was quickly promoted to on camera featured player less than a year after being part of the show, making her the sixth African American female cast member ever to perform on SNL, throughout the show’s forty year history. McKibbon was also recently nominated for an Emmy as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, for her work on SNL.

It seems the new Ghostbusters remake possesses all the right ingredients for a rib tickling smash hit, and I’m sure it will do the legacy of the original film and it’s sequel justice, being nothing short of extraordinary. The film is set to premiere during the summer of 2016. For more information on the upcoming production of the Ghostbusters remake, check out this clip from Clevver Movies youtube channel.
