“Friends are people who let you be yourself, and never let you forget it.”
– from Waiting to Exhale

Break out the popcorn and your finest hot chocolate, curly girlies! The highly anticipated biopic about the late, great Whitney Houston, finally premieres tomorrow night on Lifetime, and we at Miss Jessie’s could not be more thrilled! For those of you who are already rolling your eyes, already judging the quality of the film based on Lifetime’s former reputation as “the home of the small budget, after school special”, I’m here to tell you that Lifetime has really stepped their game up in recent years (like did you SEE Flowers in the Attic or Petals on the Wind? Incredible films!) Aptly titled Whitney, this film focuses on the life and times of the infamous diva; from her rise to fame to her notoriously complex and tumultuous relationship with fellow pop star Bobby Brown, to her tragic demise.

Whitney is the directorial debut of Academy Award nominee, fellow creative powerhouse, and real life confidant to Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett. The two grew to develop a personal relationship, during their collaborative work together on the 1995 classic drama, Waiting to Exhale.

Whitney provides a rare glimpse of the many faces of Whitney, ultimately allowing audiences to gain better understanding of Whitney’s many life transitions and personal incarnations. Just as Bernie would do for Vannah, I’m sure Angela has gone to great lengths to ensure that this film captures a compellingly genuine portrayal of the infamous pop diva, while also maintaining a sense of compassion and sensitivity when addressing some of Whitney’s more controversial and tumultuous life phases.

Natural beauty and America’s Next Top Model Cycle 3 runner up, Yaya DaCosta, stars in the film as Whitney Houston. Yaya’s portrayal of the superstar is sure to be an artistic triumph. Her electrifying performances and explosive vocal talents perfectly honor Houston’s legacy, as it always should be, through the power of music.
