After months of success on the competitive film festival circuit, Chris Rock’s latest film, Top Five, finally hits mainstream theaters!

Written and directed by Rock, this star-studded dram-edy is loosely based on his own life experiences. Rock plays the film’s protagonist, Andre Allen, a successful comedian turned blockbuster movie mega star, but following a great life epiphany, determines that his next incarnation should be that that of a dramatic actor. In spite of his yearning to be taken seriously and finally have his authentic connection to his craft appreciated by his public, Allen is ironically engaged to the current reigning queen of rachet reality TV, Erica Long, played by Gabrielle Union. Erica embodies each stereotypical, superficial character we have seen stir the pot on every reality TV franchise, from The Real Housewives, to The Apprentice, to The Bachelor. Erica is that person we’ve heard declare over and over again that, “She is not on this show to make friends”, and though morally devoid, she continues to be a reality TV fan favorite. In common reality TV fashion, Erica has decided the upcoming nuptials be the basis for a major television special, which of course ignites media mayhem in the pop culture sphere. While making the usual publicity rounds, Andre meets Chelsea Brown (played by Rosario Dawson), a brilliant, spunky, down to earth journalist from The New Yorker. Clearly lost, torn between what society expects of him and uncertainty about what he really wants for himself, Andre and Chelsea embark on an odyssey through New York City, retracing steps of his youth. Andre gains clarity about who he is and what he really wants in the present, by revisiting the places of his past. Like other holiday classics, such as A Christmas Carol or It’s a Wonderful Life, this is a movie about personal discovery and emotional transformation, communicated via blunt honesty, organic humor.
