Ladies Night Anthems: Beyoncé’s Latest Music Video for 7/11, and Other Songs Celebrating Girl’s Night!

Everyone has been buzzing about the release of Beyoncé’s latest music video for her newest single, 7/11. For those of you who haven’t seen it yet—spoiler alert—this video is nothing like anything she has ever released before. Instead of investing in a multimillion dollar video shoot with elaborate costumes, crazy special effects, complex dance sequences, and all other remaining elements of spectacle and fanfare turned up and full throttle, 7/11 is as minimalistic as they come, in terms of typical expectations for music videos. Though some could argue that this isn’t the first time the singer has utilized minimalism to her advantage and that some of Beyoncé’s best creative work has derived from this concept, such as in her (now iconic) Single Ladies music video, 7/11 is different because it allows us to see the world renowned, mega star as we have never seen her before.

Shot like a casual home video, Beyoncé appears to us in her most comfortable and relaxed state, completely stripped of her signature glitz and glamour—no six inch heels, no makeup, even no pants! Her vulnerability is refreshing, and as she laughs at herself while donning sweats and boy’s underwear, as she prances about her unkempt hotel suite, cluttered with piles of clothes, Blue Ivy’s toys, and dirty dishes, we are reminded that at the end of the day, Beyoncé is just a regular girl. She too sometimes needs a moment to just chill her friends, let her hair down, and dance like no one is watching.

We’ve all been there and had those moments in the company of our closet girlfriends, in which we become lost in a fit of giggles and goofiness. One can never be too old for a girl’s night, and I actually believe that after a certain age they become more of a necessity to remain focused and grounded during the complex twists, turns, and pitfalls that come along with being an independent adult. Sometimes the only remedy for a hard day in “the real world” is throwing on some comfy clothes, calling the girls over, ordering calorie rich takeout, and spontaneously busting out in song and dance with hairdryer microphones for a non-existent audience. It’s simply a grown up variation of a classic childhood, “girl’s only- no boys allowed!” slumber party… but now perhaps, with addition of a little alcohol.

Maybe this time is more valuable to us than merely for nostalgia’s sake—it’s a time in which secrets are shared, memories are made, and genuine female bonding can occur in this safe vacuum of merriment. There truly is no better way to unwind, than with a little bit of quality girl time.
