We are so proud of actress Laverne Cox, for earning an Emmy nom, for her role onthe Netflix dramedy, Orange is the New Black! For those of you who are living under a rock, Ms. Cox plays prison inmate and hairdresser, Sophia Burest. Her performance is both moving and honest, as Sophia’s story has warmed the hearts of the loyal OITNB fans everywhere.

This is nomination is a ground making moment in history, as Laverne is the first openly transgender person to ever be presented with this honor, by the Emmys. This is also a particularly monumental moment for the LGBT community, because while many actors have been nominated for portraying transgender characters, Laverne is actually the first real transgender actor to be acknowledged for an extraordinary performance, by the Television Academy. She has been nominated in the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category, stating, “I’m on Cloud 9! I’m through the roof! What a wonderful, wonderful day for Orange, and for black trans-women! Would you ever have thought a show about a women’s prison would have this moment? It’s unbelievable!”
