Celebrate April Fools Day with Serena Williams and Beyoncé Knowles

Happy April Fools Day curly queens! My favorite way of celebrating the fools holiday, is watching a clever satire or parody, and this is why I waited to post this comedic gem I discovered online a few days ago. While bored and waiting for a phone call, I zipped through my Facebook newsfeed, as a means to pass the time. Like most people, I follow many of my favorite celebrities in addition to friends, and as I scrolled I noticed Beyoncé had posted a new video on her wall. My hope was that perhaps Queen Bey had released yet another straight to Youtube music video, adding to the saga of videos she released in conjunction with her 2014 album release, and I was amongst the first to discover it. I scrolled and clicked as quickly as possibly, my eager sausage fingers stumbling over my touchscreen, which, of course, only intensified the suspense. Finally my phone screen revealed the details of this Beyoncé post:

I was initially puzzled by the post. I assumed Serena Williams and Beyoncé had probably crossed paths many times before, as their careers have earned each of them more than enough notoriety, to be considered amongst the contemporary social elite. This was especially evident back in 2013, when Beyoncé openly published a congratulatory letter to the tennis star, after Serena’s grand slam win, in the prestigious French Open tournament.

The fact that there is a mutual respect for each other’s professional endeavors is not a surprise, but why would Beyoncé repost a video of Serena Williams, and refer to it as “cute”? I’ve watched Serena play tennis before and when that lime ball drops, and “cute” is the last adjective I would use to describe Serena Williams when in game mode. Poised and focused? Yes. Tough? Sure. Aggressively determined to win? Absolutely. Serena is known for her lethal serves and on point accuracy. It is this ruthless gaming strategy that allowed her to earn an Olympic Gold Medal, and why she currently holds the title of number 1 female tennis pro in the world. Serena may look cute in her designer tennis whites, but her gaming technique and immaculate physical hustle would not be at the level it is right now, if her main priority was being “cute” on the tennis courts. Also, why was Beyoncé reposting this video from Vogue? Obviously the only way I was ever going to get answers was to watch the video.

While I hate to be the one to correct Queen Bey, this video was actually beyond cute- Serena William’s parody of Beyoncé’s music video for 7/11 was adorably hilarious! Everything from the country club setting, to scenes of her chilling with the elderly country club patrons, to Serena’s original combination of dance and tennis moves, literally tickled me to my core. After doing a little more research I discovered Serena had made this video for Vogue, as a means to celebrate her April 2015 cover shoot (on stands now!).

Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, Serena’s cover is especially monumental, as she is the first female African American athlete ever to appear solo on the cover of Vogue. The tennis pro looks stunning as she stands proudly in a teal sheath dress by Rag & Bone, with her beautiful curls blowing in the wind. Needless to say, she looks flawless!

I love that rather than throw an extravagant, outlandish party, Serena took a more creative route to celebrate her success, in a manner in which everyone can enjoy. So thank you Serena for breaking down barriers, making us laugh, and looking cute while doing it!
